It is Day Three. Watercolor and I have reached a tenuous, if mostly peaceful accord. On the other hand, Masking Fluid and I have become fast friends. It is good to know I have an ally in this endeavor. I will keep you informed of any and all developments.

As you can probably guess by the title, I've made it to day two. There was never really any doubt on my part, though I have come to a realization: I'm either going to have to get faster and more proficient or become a bit more flexible about completion versus perfection in order to stay on schedule.
I realize I'm at the beginning of this adventure and learning takes time, but like Veruca Salt, I want it NOW! Not really, I do have SOME self-control. That said, here is today's entry. Each painting will be posted here as well as on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag 100daysofwatercolor. Feel free to join the fun at any time!! My dad was a man of character, humor, a hard worker, a great dad. All of his life, Dad was interested, curious, always wanted to know more. It didn't matter who a person was or what status they did or did not hold, he engaged in conversation and listened to their story. Education was important to him, perhaps because his own was interrupted so often as his family moved to follow employment. He often told the story of being assigned the same book in three different grades in three different schools. There is some debate over which book it was, but there is no debate that he loved to learn. In that vein, I could think of no better way to honor my dad this Father's Day than to challenge myself to learn something new. I have decided to learn to watercolor. Don't get me wrong, I have used watercolor for years, I've just never felt comfortable with it. I mean, light to dark is not a natural progression in painting for me. Watercolor is also much less forgiving than other mediums. In most other mediums, if I make a mistake I can erase, paint over, or edit undo. Not with watercolor. Watercolor is challenging and requires patience (not always in my back pocket). For the next 100 days or 100 pieces of paper, I will paint. I have my stack of paper cut into 4" x 6" pieces, hoping that is a manageable size. I will probably go through more than a few brushes and will certainly need to buy more paint. I'm positive there will be stumbles and missteps. I will not be pointing those out, preferring to view them as lessons learned or happy accidents. I will be posting one painting each day (hopefully) for the next 100 days. There may be a day missed here or there as I complete other work, but I will stick as closely to that timeline as possible. Even if days are missed, that HUGE stack of paper in the picture? It WILL be vanquished! Come along with me on my adventure! Day One 6/18/2018 |
